A SPECIAL VINEYARD SITE: DURBACHER PLAUELRAIN
The Laible Vineyard comprises of 7.5 ha that lie in the heart of Durbach’s best site, the legendary steep slopes of the Plauelrain, with a very steep gradient of up to 80 degrees! Growing wines in these extreme conditions is a “labour of love”. Here, nature is constantly challenging the winegrower: from pruning to harvesting, everything has to be done manually. The most precious treasures in the soil are: Granite, Achate (one of the Laible Wines actually carries this name), gneiss and melaphyre to name only some of the minerals and soil structures.
The soils are best characterised as mineral and stony, with only a little soil covering the underlying rock. This forces the roots of the vines to grow deep into the cracks of the weathered granite rocks, in which lie the important nutrients and minerals which give the Laible wines their unique mineral character.
